The Premier League have released a statement, explaining why Arsenal defender William Saliba was sent off after a VAR check in their 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth.

Referee Rob Jones initially showed Saliba a yellow card after he brought down Evanilson.

But Jones was asked to review the incident on the pitchside monitor by VAR and eventually upgraded it to a red card.

The Premier League via their match centre social media account, wrote: “The referee gave Saliba a yellow card for a challenge on Evanilson.

“The VAR deemed that Saliba denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and recommended an on-field review. The referee then upgraded the yellow to a red card.”

Saliba will now be suspended for Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool next Sunday.
