Rivers United coach, Evan Ogenyi was full of praise for his players after their last-gasp 2-1 victory against Dreams FC of Ghana in Uyo on Sunday.
The hosts trailed 1-0 at half-time with Abdul Aziz Issah netting the opener for Dreams FC.
Deputy Echeta equalised in the 61st minute before Kazie Godswill scored the winning goal with almost the last kick of the game.
Rivers United advanced to the quarter-finals with the win, finishing in second position behind Dreams FC.
Ogenyi said his team showed a strong fight to win the keenly contested game.
“The most important thing is the qualification. We told our players not to be anxious. We had like three chances in the first half which we wasted,” Ogenyi told reporters after the game.
“You know when you don’t take your chances you might be punished by your opponent. They scored us in the 40th minute of the first half.
“You will agree with me that a team that comes from behind to win, is a team that shows character.
“We told the players this is not just a Rivers United project, it is a Nigeria project and we know what is at stake. We need to qualify.”
