South Africa coach, Hugo Broos has warned that the four penalty saves goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made during his side’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, quarter-final win against Cape Verde on Saturday was not luck but hard work.
Broos gave the warning ahead of South Africa’s AFCON semi-final clash with Nigeria on Wednesday.
The 71-year-old was speaking to reporters after South Africa defeated Cape Verde via penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.
Recall that Williams was the hero as South Africa beat Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties to advance to the last-four where they will face the Super Eagles, who defeated Angola.
“When we got to the penalty shootout, it was a special thing for the players, because during training they were scoring them,” Broos said.
“When we have a goalkeeper who stops four penalty kicks, this is not luck but a lot of hard work.”
He added, “Reaching the semi-finals is in itself a good thing for South African football.”
