Manchester City are eyeing Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to be their next manager if Pep Guardiola rejects a new contract.

Alonso has built a fine reputation for himself, winning the Bundesliga title while going unbeaten last season.

The 42-year-old’s first full season with Leverkusen saw him become the favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp at former club Liverpool.

But Alonso rejected the opportunity to return to Anfield, opting to stay at Leverkusen for at least one more season.

However, according to Sky Germany, this current campaign is expected to be his last.

City are firmly interested alongside Real Madrid, the club Alonso left Liverpool for in 2009.

The Premier League champions are being forced to consider potential candidates as Guardiola’s contract expires at the end of this season.
