The Premier League has revealed that the Video Assistant Referee, VAR, agreed with referee David Coote’s decision not to send Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez off for his two-footed challenge on Daichi Kamada.
The incident took place in the 63rd minute of a 0-0 draw between United and Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Martinez jumped and planted both feet just centimetres from where Kamada was controlling the ball.
Although the United defender won the ball and didn’t touch Kamada, Palace players were angry by the decision to only show Martinez a yellow card.
The Premier League’s Match Centre account has since posted an explanation of the decision-making process on X.
It read: “The referee issued a yellow card to Martinez for a challenge on Kamada.
“VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s call of no red card, deeming this was a reckless challenge and made no contact with Kamada.”
