Former Liverpool midfielder, Graeme Souness, has criticized Bayern Munich centre-back, Matthijs de Ligt, who is close to joining the Red Devils as a ‘light-weight centre-half’.
De Ligt was regarded as one of the promising young centre-backs when he first emerged at Ajax.
Following subsequent spells at Juventus and Bayern Munich, the 25-year-old has struggled to live up to that tag.
However, the Dutchman is all set to join Man United alongside with his Bayern Munich teammate Noussair Mazraoui this week after recently arriving in the UK for their medicals.
But Souness is not convinced of De Ligt’s defensive quality.
He said on a talkSPORT podcast:
“When I look at De Ligt, a light-weight centre-half, can play. But can he do the things you want from a centre-half – first and foremost – defend – that seems to have gone out the game. Keep the ball out from the back of the net.”
