Spain moved top of Group C in their opening match in the Olympics women’s football in Nantes on Thursday.
This was possible after they came from a goal down to beat Japan 2-1.
Recall that before Spain’s clash with Japan, Nigeria’s Super Falcons had lost 1-0 against Brazil.
Spain playmaker, Aitana Bonmati scored one goal and created another as the world champions defeated Japan.
Olympic debutants Spain recovered from going behind to an early goal to avenge a 4-0 group stage loss to the Asians in last year’s World Cup, which they eventually won.
Japan opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Aoba Fujino’s superb free kick sailed into the top right corner,
2023 Ballon d’Or winner Bonmati equalised for Spain only nine minutes later.
Spain dominated possession in the second half and took the lead in the 74th minute through a fine strike from Mariona Caldentey.
The victory means Spain sits top of Group C with three points ahead of second placed Brazil, who also have the same points.
Japan is next with no points, while Nigeria also has no points and sits bottom.
The Asian country will face Brazil in their next game on Sunday, while Nigeria will take on Spain.
