France head coach, Didier Deschamps, has claimed his players “didn’t play as well as we could” as they were eliminated from Euro 2024.

Deschamps also admitted Kylian Mbappe “didn’t perform as well as he usually does”.

Les Bleus have exited the competition following a 2-1 defeat to Spain in Tuesday’s semi-final.

France came into the tournament as favourites, but only scored just one goal from open play.

Mbappe especially struggled to make any impact, with the Real Madrid forward seemingly hampered after breaking his nose in the game against Austria.

“I will not say my players didn’t give their all, but we didn’t play as well as we could for various reasons,” Deschamps told reporters.

“Kylian didn’t perform as well as he usually does. I’m not making excuses. We tried to do our best with what we had and tried to be as efficient as possible.”
