Former Liverpool defender, Glen Johnson has suggested that Gareth Southgate, the current manager of the England national team, could be a good fit to become the Reds’ next head coach.
Johnson believes that Southgate has done a great job with England, winning 59 of 92 games, and has the potential to replicate his success at Liverpool, once Euro 2024 is over.
The former Chelsea star argued that Southgate’s success with England could be attributed to his ability to handle players of similar standards, a trait that would make him a good fit for Liverpool.
He also urged the club’s owners to consider all options before rushing to appoint a new manager.
Liverpool have been on the lookout for a new manager since Jurgen Klopp announced in January that he would step down at the end of the season.
While Roberto De Zerbi and Xabi Alonso are currently considered the front runners for the job, Johnson believes that Southgate would be a good candidate should he become available in the summer.
“If he [Southgate] is available in the summer, then you’ve got to look at all the options,” Johnson told BetFred.
“He has done a brilliant job with England, so there’s no reason why he can’t be successful with a club like Liverpool as he’d be dealing with a similar standard of players. You’d need to have the chat because you can’t just dismiss him if he is available.”
