A heartwarming insight into Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan‘s enduring relationship has emerged from an old article written by Jaya’s father, journalist Taroon Coomar Bhadhuri, in 1989. The piece highlights Amitabh’s unwavering support for Jaya’s identity and career. This revelation comes amidst Jaya Bachchan’s confrontation with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who addressed her by her husband’s name.

Taroon, in the piece, had shared an anecdote where, after their marriage, someone questioned why Jaya’s film posters still featured her maiden name, Bhaduri, to which Amitabh had promptly responded by saying, “Of course, she is a Bachchan, but you should know that in the industry and professionally, she is more famous as Jaya Bhaduri.” This gesture left Taroon impressed, and he praised Amitabh as “not the run-of-the-mill Bombay film star.”

Bhaduri also dismissed rumours that Amitabh married Jaya for her stardom, emphasising, “I liked Amitabh. I felt he was not the run-of-the-mill Bombay film star. There were vicious people who said that Amitabh married Jaya because she was a big star, but it’s totally untrue. He waited for Zanjeer to be a success. But Jaya would have married him anyway. I know that for certain. She is not a fickle-minded person. She is a very determined individual, bent on having her way since childhood. It is difficult for me to say what drew them together. But one thing is definite—Jaya would not have fallen for an ordinary person.”

Amitabh and Jaya have been married for over five decades. They met in 1970 at the Pune Film Institute, and their romance blossomed on the sets of Guddi. Jaya was already a superstar, while Amitabh was struggling to make a name for himself. Despite initial rejection from Amitabh’s parents, the couple tied the knot on June 3, 1973, after the success of Zanjeer. The couple’s successful films, including Abhimaan, Sholay, Mili, and Chupke Chupke, showcased their undeniable on-screen chemistry. These iconic films solidified their status as one of Bollywood’s most beloved couples.

Proud of the success of not only his daughter Jaya, but also his son-in-law Amitabh, Taroon had written, “After Zanjeer, their biggest hit was Abhimaan. Sholay came much later. Then there was also Mili and Chupke Chupke. Mili was one film in which I was tremendously impressed by my daughter’s talent. Abhimaan, Kora Kagaz and Annadata are also great films.”

Amitabh’s struggles and determination also impressed Taroon, who noted, “Amitabh was, and is, a lovable boy. He struggled hard to come up in the world of films. Initial failures did not deter him, and with a teutonic doggedness, he pursued his career. He proposed marriage to Jaya only when the film Zanjeer clicked and he has not looked back since.”
