The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has hailed D’Tigress and Favour Ofili following their victories on Sunday amid the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics Games.
Ofili had qualified for the semifinals of women’s 200m after executing a good race plan to win heat 6 in a time of 22.24s on Sunday morning.
The 21-year-old defeated Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, who finished 2nd in 22.28s and Gina Bass-Bittaye 3rd in 22.84s.
D’Tigress, on the other hand, made history by becoming the first African team (male or female) to reach the Olympic quarterfinals after beating Canada.
Reacting, Enoh, in a statement he personally signed, said D’Tigress and Ofili have brought joy to Nigerians.
“Dear D’Tigress, today marks a historic achievement. By becoming the first African team (male or female) to reach the Olympic quarterfinals, you have made a groundbreaking accomplishment,” Enoh said.
“Despite being ranked 12th, you defeated FIBA’s 3rd and 5th teams, demonstrating exceptional skill. Your success has brought joy to Nigerians everywhere.
“We commend you. Favour Ofili, your determination and talent shine bright. Overcoming obstacles, you excelled in the heat. We celebrate your collective triumph and urge you to strive for gold. Continue to excel!”
