The maiden edition of the South East/South South Volleyball tournament ended in Umuahia with Abia State clinching first position in the male category, while Imo and Anambra states finished 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, in the male category.
In the female category, Anambra State clinched the first position, while Bayelsa and Rivers states took 2nd and 3rd positions.
Speaking at the event, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti said that his administration would maintain its drive to develop every branch of sports in the state.
Otti, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Nwaobilor Ananaba said that many talented volleyball players who competed at the event were discovered from the grassroots, adding that Abia was becoming the sports destination.
He congratulated the organizers of the competition, and thanked the staff of the Abia Sports Council for providing an enabling environment.
He also appreciated the Vice President of the Volleyball Association of Nigeria for the pitch she donated.
The Vice President, Volleyball Association of Nigeria and Chairman, Volleyball League Management Committee, Mrs. Nkechi Ezeugwue, while congratulating the participants for their passion in the game, urged them to continue to pursue their dreams.
She thanked governor Alex Otti for sponsoring the game and requested that it be made an annual one.
Earlier in his address, the Abia State Director of Sports, Mr. George Obioma thanked the Volleyball family for their efforts in developing Volleyball in the South East and South South.
