Arsenal legend, Ian Wright admitted he was ‘very surprised’ by manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to bench attacker, Gabriel Martinelli against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Martinelli was left out of Arsenal’s Premier League starting XI against Crystal Palace on Saturday at Emirates Stadium.

The Brazil international only came on after 69 minutes, replacing goalscorer, Leandro Trossard.

He scored a brace despite only being on the pitch for around 20 minutes against the visitors.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Wright said, “When you get someone like Gabriel Martinelli in that much space, the line was so high, I was very surprised he did not start.

“I am quite pleased he came on and made the impact he did. [His first goal is] a very good finish. Very accurate. Brilliant, superb.”
