Former Arsenal Defender, Martin Keown has revealed that Aston Villa manager Unai Emery cost Mikel Arteta’s side the Premier League title this season.

Keown claimed that Emery, a former Arsenal manager, was ‘desperate’ to beat his former club, adding that he took six points from the Gunners.

Recall that Arsenal narrowly missed out on securing their first Premier League trophy since 2004 on the final day of the season as Manchester City defeated West Ham United 3-1 to finish two points clear at the top of the table.

The Premier League North London club lost home and away against Aston Villa (2-0 and 1-0) during the 2023/24 campaign.

“They [Man City] have that luxury, Arsenal are a developing club,” Keown said on talkSPORT on Monday.

“You go into a fight with Man City, if Arsenal manage a draw and they don’t lose to Villa they can be champions. So they went there to pick up those necessary points because they knew if they got beat it would just wipe Arsenal out and City would do it again.

“I think the reason Arsenal didn’t win the league was because of Unai Emery – he takes six points off of Arsenal.”
