Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has revealed that Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne asked to be substituted during their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid.

The second leg at the Etihad finished 1-1, after the first leg ended 3-3.

There were no goals in extra time and the winner had to be determined via a penalty shoot-out.

Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic both saw their kicks saved, to ensure City would not defend their trophy.

However, before the shoot-out, several City players asked to be taken off.

“Manu [Akanji], Erling [Haaland] and Kevin [De Bruyne] asked me to go out. They couldn’t continue,” Guardiola told the media afterwards.
