The St. Louis Post-Dispatch pulled no punches with a damning assessment of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) as “quite possibly the worst sitting senator in America right now.”
The Missouri newspaper’s editorial board said Sunday that Donald Trump acolyte Hawley “stands apart for his singular role in spurring the violence” of Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in their ultimately failed bid to overturn the 2020 election result.
Hawley was “the first and initially only senator to announce his baseless challenge of the election results, setting in motion the grotesque events that followed,” the board noted in an op-ed endorsing Hawley’s Democratic rival Lucas Kunce, an attorney and Marine veteran who the newspaper described as being “as richly qualified for high office as Hawley is unfit.”
The newspaper also trashed Hawley’s “shortsighted and obtuse quest to nix Ukrainian aid” and “unparalleled record of demagoguery on the Senate floor, where he endlessly spews faux-populist sound and fury signifying nothing.”
Kunce has reminded voters of Hawley’s actions on Jan. 6 as part of his campaign. See his launch video below. However, multiple polls still put Hawley several points up ahead of the election. Read the full op-ed here.
