Two female LG chairmanship candidates and 14 vice chairmanship contestants were among those who emerged winners in the just concluded Imo State local council elections.

Nkechi Mbonu emerged the chairman-elect for Okigwe LGA while Chika Ibekwe won the Ngor-Okpala LGA chairmanship seat.

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, ISIEC, presented certificates of return to the newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen across the 27 local government councils in the state on Wednesday.

Chairman of the state electoral commission, Charles Ejiogu said that the presentation was in line with the provision of the law establishing the Commission.

According to him, certificates of return will be issued to the councillors-elect in the next couple of days.

“Observers have adjudged that the election was very peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible,” he said.

The ISIEC boss commended the electorate for their understanding and support to the Commission, and also commended Governor Hope Uzodinma for providing the enabling environment to carry out the exercise.

He equally commended the security agencies and the media, as well as the 17 political parties that he said participated in the exercise, for their various supports.

Speaking during the ceremony, the chairman-elect for Okigwe LGA, Nkechi Mbonu commended the people of Okigwe for giving her the opportunity to serve.

She pledged to foster development in the area through innovative policies.

It would be recalled that the All Progressives Congress, APC, clinched all the seats in the 27 council areas and 305 electoral wards in the election that took place on Saturday, September 21.

Some opposition political parties have rejected the outcome of the exercise, calling for its cancellation.
