San Diego Comic-Con attendees were surprised on Saturday when “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening introduced a “superfan” before tossing to a video of Vice President Kamala Harris quoting from the show in 2013.
In the clip, the presumptive Democratic nominee read a line from the iconic “Treehouse of Horror VII” episode where Kang and Kodos impersonate then-President Bill Clinton and Bob Dole at a 1996 presidential debate.
“Our country should move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling toward freedom,” said Harris in the clip.
The clip of the then-California attorney general stems from a 2013 University of Chicago scavenger hunt where students were challenged to get an elected official to read the line, the A.V. Club reported.
The footage reportedly sparked cheers from the panel’s audience. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Comic-Con attendees seemed to believe that Harris filmed the video for the event.
Harris’ Comic-Con moment arrives more than three years after “Simpsons” fans likened her outfit at President Joe Biden’s inauguration to Lisa Simpson’s look in the “Bart to the Future” episode from 2000.
Lisa Simpson, who appears as the “first straight female president” in the episode, reveals that her administration inherited “quite a budget crunch” from former President Donald Trump.
“The Simpsons” writer Al Jean said on social media that Harris’ look that’s similar to Lisa Simpson is a “prediction” from the show that he’s proud to be a part of.
