Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tore into an unnamed senior House Democratic lawmaker who claimed that many in the party are “resigned” to Donald Trump winning the election.
“If you’re a ‘senior Democrat’ that feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make space for true leadership that refuses to resign themselves to fascism,” she wrote on X. “This kind of leadership is functionally useless to the American people. Retire.”
Ocasio-Cortez was responding to a report in Axios on how efforts to replace President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket have taken a “backseat” after Saturday’s attempted assassination of Trump.
One person, identified as a “senior House Democrat,” told the website: “We’ve all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency.”
Trump is scheduled to accept the GOP nomination for president this week at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The Democratic Party will hold its convention next month in Chicago.
