Rob Reiner is calling on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
On Sunday, the “Stand by Me” and “When Harry Met Sally” director urged the party leader to “step down” from his reelection bid in a fiery post on X, formerly called Twitter.
“It’s time to stop fucking around. If the Convicted Felon wins, we lose our Democracy,” wrote Reiner, who has been a supporter of Biden until now and a significant donor of the Democratic Party. “Joe Biden has effectively served US with honor, decency, and dignity. It’s time for Joe Biden to step down.”
On Monday, author Stephen King joined Reiner and multiple other celebrities, like showrunner Damon Lindelof and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, in calling for Biden to bow out of the race over fears that he’s fumbling away the election to Donald Trump.
“Joe Biden has been a fine president, but it’s time for him—in the interests of the America he so clearly loves—to announce he will not run for re-election,” King wrote on X.
Reiner and King’s comments come after Biden’s mental acuity and capabilities have been heavily questioned recently, particularly following his shaky debate against Trump last month that has sparked concern among Democrats in Congress.
Since the debate, Biden has defended himself, insisting he can win against Trump and run the country for another four years.
“I’m the most qualified person to beat him, and I know how to get things done,” Biden told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos during an interview last week.
He also explained his poor performance at the debate, saying, “It was a bad episode — no indication of any serious condition. I was exhausted.”
Still, Biden insisted that he has no desire to exit the race.
“If the Lord Almighty came down and said, ‘Joe, get out of the race,’ I’d get out of the race,” he said. “But the Lord Almighty’s not coming down.”
