CNN commentator Van Jones said it’s “game over” for President Joe Biden if he botches the debate against Donald Trump next week. (Watch the video below.)
Jones on Thursday escalated the importance of Biden’s performance to the highest level.
“This is the entire election as far as I’m concerned,” he said, noting that viewership will be high.
“If Biden goes out there and messes up, it’s game over,” he continued. “If he walks out there and a week later he’s lower in the polls, it’s panic in the party. But if he goes in there and he can handle himself against Donald Trump — a runaway train, a locomotive, a raging bull — then this guy deserves another shot to be president, because that is tough.”
If Biden can go toe to toe with Trump for an hour and a half, Jones said, “you are fit to be president.”
The first debate ahead of Biden and Trump’s expected rematch in November will be held June 27 on CNN.
Trump and his allies have relentlessly questioned Biden’s vigor and sharpness, and they have stepped up their use of deceptive videos of the president to support their claims. The criminally convicted GOP candidate has also baselessly accused Biden of using drugs, especially cocaine, in energetic moments.
Meanwhile, the former president continues to rack up blunders on the campaign trail.
Biden, who has moved ahead in some polls, has retreated to Camp David to prep for the showdown. Trump reportedly is eschewing practice debates for rallies and meetings with advisers about strategy.
“This is the whole presidency in a bottle, in a week,” Jones said.
