A former GOP communications director on Capitol Hill slammed “MAGA world” for running with a reportedly debunked Facebook post about former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial. (Watch the video below.)
Tara Setmayer said Trump’s followers are living in a “truth-free” universe in an interview with MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin on Sunday.
Mohyeldin had noted how conservatives completely bought a Facebook entry supposedly from the cousin of a juror who claimed that Trump would be convicted before the verdict was announced. Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the trial, shared the post with Trump’s legal team and prosecutors.
In a cynical belief that the fix was in, Fox News’ Sean Hannity called for a mistrial, and other right-wing personalities cried foul.
Mohyeldin predicted that Trump and surrogates will continue to promote the random post as evidence of injustice, even though the author was a self-avowed “professional shitposter” who said they were merely trolling.
The conspiracy theory will live on for Trump loyalists, Mohyeldin pointed out.
“They live in an alternative universe, and so it’s a universe that we all don’t live in,” said Setmayer, now an adviser with the anti-Trump Lincoln Project. “It’s a truth-free and fact-free universe. It’s the ‘alternative facts’ universe of MAGA world.”
“Trump and his acolytes can continue to do this, but the average American independent moderate voters, they’re sick of it and not comfortable voting for a convicted felon, nor should they,” she continued.
Setmayer was the communications director for former Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.). She later renounced her Republican affiliation in 2020 over the “malignancy of Trumpism.”
