Controversial Nigerian media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, aka Daddy Freeze, has said South African singer Tyla deserved her victory over Nigerian artists at the 66th Grammys.
DAILY POST reports that the Nigerian quintet of Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Davido, Asake, and Olamide were snubbed at the 66th Grammys on Sunday, with Tyla, the only non-Nigerian nominee in the maiden Best African Music Performance category, picking up the award.
Some aggrieved Nigerian music fans questioned the choice of Tyla’s ‘Water’ over hit songs by Nigerian artists, accusing the Recording Academy of complicity.
However, reacting during a recent Instagram live session with fans, Daddy Freeze insisted that Tyla’s Grammy win was well deserved.
He said: “Tyla’s Grammy win over Nigerian artists was not ojoro [scam]. I don’t see the ojoro. I’m struggling to see the ojoro.
“Globally, in my opinion, ‘Water’ was a slightly bigger song [than Nigerian songs nominated]. It doesn’t mean those songs were not big. They were very big. It’s just that ‘Water’ has more vitality. It is massive on Tiktok.”
