“Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig said recently that the legendary comic Robin Williams unwittingly “sabotaged” two of his standup chances back in the day. (Check out the audio below.)

Feig said he was pursuing a club comedy career when the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and Roseanne Barr reigned, and he finally got his shot.

But another giant on the scene spoiled the moment.

“I got sabotaged by Robin Williams a couple of times when I finally got to be a performer at the Improv,” Feig told Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the “Dinner’s On Me” podcast.

“I still wasn’t one of the main guys, so you’d get a later spot,” Feig continued. “I remember, like once, it was my time to get up, there was a full audience and I was so excited, and they come up like, ‘Oh, Robin just wants to get up and do a quick set first,’ and I’m like, ‘Well, cool ― Robin Williams.’”

Giving stars impromptu stage time is standard procedure at many clubs, so Feig had no choice but to roll with it. Clubs like the Improv and the Comedy Store were places to get discovered, he said, so you didn’t make a fuss about such things in order to stay in their good graces.

But having the mega-famous Williams cut in got him no closer to stardom.

“He did an hour and he finished, and everybody left except for one woman who was waiting for her husband to come back from the bathroom,” Feig recalled.

Paul Feig said he lost his "spark" for standup comedy -- and that's probably a good thing considering his future success as a writer and director.

Feig eventually lost his “spark” for the craft and became a writer and director. Good choice.

He created the cult-hit TV show “Freaks and Geeks” and later directed comedy movies such as “Spy” (2015), the all-female “Ghostbusters” (2016) and perhaps his signature film, “Bridesmaids” (2011.)

His movies have earned more than $1.4 billion, according to Deadline.

Fast-forward to the 16-minute mark for Feig’s not-so happy ending in standup:
