Sabrina Carpenter joked during her Sunday night concert at Madison Square Garden: “Should we talk about how I got the mayor indicted?”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams was charged last week for allegedly taking bribes and illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals in exchange for political favors.
A few weeks ago, federal investigators subpoenaed the Brooklyn Catholic church requesting information about any dealings between Adams’ ex-chief of staff, Frank Carone, and Monsignor Jamie J. Gigantiello, according to the New York Post.
What does this have to do with the “Espresso” singer? Last fall, Carpenter filmed a music video for her song “Feather” in Brooklyn’s Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-Annunciation Parish, where Gigantiello was a priest. In the video, she wears a short black dress while men kill themselves over her.
The Diocese of Brooklyn, which said it was “appalled” with the “violent and sexually provocative” music video, demoted Gigantiello for allowing Carpenter to film there.
Brooklyn diocese officials suggested to the New York Post that Carpenter’s music video led to a “broader administrative review” into the church, which then led to the federal investigation.
Addressing the controversy in a statement, Carpenter said she got permission to film the music video in the church and added, “Jesus was a carpenter.” Gigantiello said he approved the filming of the music video in an “effort to further strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up a large part of this community” and that he was unaware of any “provocative” things being filmed in the church.
