Blake Lively celebrated the release of her new movie this week in a jaw-dropping look that also served as an homage to Britney Spears.
Lively turned up at Tuesday’s premiere of “It Ends with Us” in New York, accompanied by her husband, Ryan Reynolds. She wore a vintage Versace gown studded with multicolored sequins in floral patterns.
Speaking to People magazine on the red carpet, Lively confirmed that the dress was the same one worn by Spears at Versace’s Milan Fashion Week show in 2002 as part of the fashion brand’s spring/summer 2003 collection.
“It is Britney’s actual dress,” she told the outlet. “It should be in the Smithsonian or the Met. But it’s on me. I feel so lucky!”
The “Gossip Girl” actor further explained her fashion choice on her Instagram story, praising Spears as “the ultimate queen.”
“Britney, us millennials all have a story of a moment, or of years that you made us want to shine and inspire awe, with strength, and joy and immensely hard work,” Lively wrote alongside an image of Spears wearing the Versace dress. “Thank you for your example and your contribution to women telling their stories.”
Due out Friday, “It Ends with Us” is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel of the same name. The movie follows Lily Bloom (played by Lively), who relocates from rural Maine to Boston for a fresh start after the death of her father.
As Lily settles into her new home, she strikes up a relationship with Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), a neurosurgeon who is reluctant to commit. She also unexpectedly reconnects with Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), who broke her heart years earlier when he left town to join the military.
Lively’s Spears tribute comes just days after it was confirmed that Universal Pictures had bought the film rights to the pop star’s bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
The biopic will be directed by Jon M. Chu, whose credits include “Crazy Rich Asians” and the movie adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked.”
