Princess Eugenie revealed the powerful role her mother, Sarah Ferguson, played in helping her come to terms with her scoliosis diagnosis at a young age, as well as her car from scoliosis surgery.
The 34-year-old daughter of Prince Andrew and the Duchess of York, shared three posts to mark International Scoliosis Awareness Day om Sunday — and dedicated one solely to her mom.
“My mum caught my scoliosis early and I was lucky enough to get the help I needed at 12 years old,” Eugenie shared on Instagram. “I thank her so much for that and also thank her for the confidence to be proud of my scar.”
The princess added that her mom “removed all the stigma around having scoliosis for me by confidently showing people what I’d been through and it took all the fear and anxiety out of being different at such a young age.”
“I am forever grateful and wish everyone to be proud of their scars,” she said.
The post clearly resonated with Eugenie’s mom, who responded to her post.
“I am so touched by this and in awe of you,” she wrote. “I hope this inspires young people to own their scars and life’s journey as you have so beautifully done.”
In a separate post, Eugenie also shared photos of her scar from her wedding day in order to “encourage anyone out there who’s gone through something similar to share theirs with me.”
The royal was praised for intentionally revealing her scoliosis surgery scar at her 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank in a low-backed wedding dress.
“I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you’ll see on Friday, but it’s a lovely way to honor the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this,” Eugenie told ITV’s “This Morning” ahead of her nuptials.
“I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that,” she added.
