“The Boys” is coming to an end on Prime Video, and the reactions from fans aren’t quite what you might’ve expected.
On Tuesday, Eric Kripke, the creator and showrunner of the decidedly adult superhero series, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that its fifth season will be its last.
“Season 4 premiere week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the final season!” Kripke wrote. “Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.”
Kripke posted his bombshell just two days before the season 4 premiere of the raunchy drama, which is based on the comic book series, written by Garth Ennis, of the same name.
In the post, Kripke also shared a purported script page from the season 4 finale, with its contents largely redacted aside from a cheeky message at the bottom: “SEE YOU FOR OUR FINAL SEASON, MOTHERFUCKERS!”
One might expect an outpouring of grief from some fans of the show, but many folks on X actually seemed relieved that there’s a road map to the end ― not because they dislike “The Boys,” but because they’re hoping to see it go out on top.
Kripke told Entertainment Weekly his reason for capping the show at five seasons.
“Part of it is such a wonky stupid screenwriter thing but three and five are the big magical numbers for writing,” he said. “Three is movie acts, TV acts are five. Jokes are a runner of three for five. Five just seems like a good round number.”
“It’s enough to tell the story but also bring it to a climax without wearing out its welcome,” he went on. “It’s been hard because I haven’t been able to tell everyone. I was thrilled to finally be able to get the word out there.”
Seasons 1 through 3 of “The Boys” are now streaming on Amazon Prime, with Season 4 dropping Thursday.
